Ten Summer Tips for Walking your Dog from Barkers Barbershop

As the sun shines brighter and temperatures rise, it’s the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors with your furry companion. However, just as we take precautions for ourselves in the summer heat, it’s crucial to consider the safety of our dogs during walks as well. Here are some essential tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience while walking your dog during the summer:

1. Timing is Key: Opt for early mornings or late evenings for walks when temperatures are cooler. Pavements and sidewalks can get scorching hot during the day, which can burn your dog’s paws. If you must walk during the day, stick to grassy areas or invest in dog booties to protect their paws.

2.  Stay Hydrated: Carry water for both you and your dog. Dehydration can happen quickly in hot weather, so bring along a portable water bowl and offer frequent water breaks. Signs of dehydration in dogs include excessive panting, lethargy, and dry gums.

3.  Mind the Heat: Dogs can easily overheat, especially those with thick coats or short noses (like pugs or bulldogs). Watch for signs of heatstroke such as heavy panting, glazed eyes, vomiting, or staggering. If you notice these symptoms, find shade immediately, offer water, and consider contacting a vet.

4. Protect from Sun: Just like us, dogs can get sunburned, especially on their noses, ears, and other exposed areas. Use pet-safe sunscreen on sensitive areas, particularly if your dog has light-colored fur or short hair.

5. Check the Pavement: Before walking, touch the pavement with your hand. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Opt for shady routes or use dog booties to protect their feet from burns.

6. Beware of Pests: Summer brings out ticks, fleas, and mosquitoes. Ensure your dog is on a flea and tick preventative, and consider using mosquito repellent. Check for ticks after walks, especially if you’ve been through wooded areas or tall grass.

7.  Exercise Moderation: While exercise is important, be mindful not to overexert your dog in hot weather. Adjust the intensity and duration of walks based on your dog’s breed, age, and fitness level. Consider indoor play or mental stimulation games during peak heat times.

8.  Know Your Dog: Some dogs are more sensitive to heat than others. Brachycephalic breeds (short-nosed dogs), seniors, and puppies are at higher risk. Adjust your walking routine accordingly and be vigilant for any signs of distress.

9. Stay Leashed and Tagged: In summer, wildlife and other distractions are more abundant. Keep your dog leashed to prevent them from chasing after critters or running into dangerous situations. Ensure they have a properly fitted collar with ID tags and a microchip in case they get lost.

10.  Cooling Techniques: Consider bringing along a cooling vest or bandana, or even a damp towel, to help your dog stay cool during walks. Some dogs also enjoy splashing in shallow water or kiddie pools for a quick cooldown.

By following these ten simple yet effective tips, you can ensure that your dog stays safe, comfortable, and healthy during your summer walks together. Remember, your vigilance and preparation are key to enjoying the season while keeping your furry friend happy. So, leash up, stay hydrated, and enjoy the sunshine with your canine companion. Woof!
